Naomi Moon Siegel’s expressive, lyrical trombone playing is revolutionizing the way the trombone is heard and viewed. Fusing folk melodies with fantastical soundscapes and tight grooves, she performs her own style of indie-folk/pop/jazz. First Night is excited to host the next generation of jazz musicians. The Missoula All City Jazz Program is a new non-profit leading high school students through an intensive program featuring master workshops and visits from nationally acclaimed artists. Join us in welcoming these talented students to the stage.

7:30 pm - Salsa Loca

Salsa Loca is Montana’s hottest Latin music ensemble. Made up of some of the area’s finest musicians, Salsa Loca specializes in the irresistible rhythms of Cuba and Latin America – Bolero, Cha-Cha, Mambo, Samba, and beyond. This is some of the best party and dance music in the world.

9:00 pm - Big Sky Mudflaps

The Big Sky Mudflaps are celebrating 42 years of performing together. Since 1975, their unique sound – a lively blend of rhythm and blues, swing and rock and roll – has won them major national acclaim. The band has earned praise from the New York Times and many other national publications. The Big Sky Mudflaps have shared concert billing with internationally known artists such as Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, and Riders in the Sky. They have made several featured appearances on the NBC “Today Show”, as well as on public radio’s “Prairie Home Companion”. Their new CD will be available during their show at First Night.

10:30 pm - Ed Norton Big Band

The Ed Norton Big Band is a 17 piece group specializing in classic American swing music. The band’s repetoire includes tunes from the great bands of the swing era, including Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington, alongside more modern jazz masters such as Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. From “In the Mood” to “One O’Clock Jump”, swing dancers of all ages will hear their favorites.

2:30 pm - Absent Wilson Conspiracy

We play contemporary jazz, featuring our own original compositions and a few new standards. We use the compositions as a springboard for collective exploration and improvisation, emphasizing group interplay and the subtle breathing of dynamics, shifting textures, and rhythms to provide a musical journey for all listeners, including the band.

4:00 pm - Dick Skultin Jazz Quartet

Three musicians are part of the famed Big Sky Mud Flaps of Western Montana who have played for various and many kinds of venues. The fourth is known to be the only accordion player in Montana capable of playing jazz styles. He has performed with the other three on various occasions and with other known jazz artists in Western Montana. Though approaching 90 years of age he is still remarkably capable.

5:15 pm - Jazz Graffiti

Jazz Graffiti is Missoula’s multi-generational jazz ensemble. Made up of guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, and both tenor and alto saxophones, the group performs a lively mix of classic and contemporary jazz, combining some of Missoula’s young jazz musicians with several veteran players, Jazz Graffiti is adept at a variety of styles – funk, soul, blues, latin, and swing – and adept at pleasing audiences of all ages and musical tastes.

9:30 pm - Carlson & Meissner Quartet

Kimberlee Carlson, Ron Meissner and Pete Hand have been playing as a jazz trio in Western Montana since 2012. Gigging regularly and featured at the Top Hat and at Missoula’s Jazzoula (season’s 2012-2017) they create a classic jazz sound.


All volunteers receive FREE admission to First Night.
Most shifts are only 2 hours.
