Express to Speak
University Center 3rd Floor Lounge, 4 pm to 5 pm
This program is designed to enhance teen and pre-teen abilities to write and perform spontaneous poetry. Better known as spoken word poetry or hip-hop, spontaneous poetry integrates real world experience with improvised performance. Express to Speak gives participants the opportunity to express themselves artistically through storytelling. Mind mapping exercises used in this workshop are designed to open up kids to their voice, views, and passions while giving them real life problem solving tools. Participants are encouraged to use what they learn by signing up for the Poetry Slam being held later at First Night Missoula.
Why? A Play by Kathy Witkowsky
University Center 3rd Floor Lounge, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Why? is a witty, fast paced, one act comedy by award winning Missoula journalist and playwright Kathy Witkowsky that explores the many reasons people are drawn to romantic relationships, and why they marry – or don’t. Cate and Jim are a couple in their 50’s who come to Chicago to tell Cate’s elderly mother, Irene, and her companion, Gordon, about their plans to marry. During dinner at an upscale restaurant, all four of them reveal more than they’d planned to, and nothing ever tastes the same again. This staged reading will be the play’s premiere.
